Signs, Symptoms, and How to Help

Warning Signs of Anorexia:

The person…

  • Is thin and getting thinner, losing 15% or more body weight
  • Continues to diet or restrict foods even though he or she is not overweight
  • Has a distorted body image, feeling fat even when she is too thin
  • Preoccupied with food, calories, nutrition, or cooking
  • Denies hunger
  • Exercises excessively and obsessively
  • Frequent weighing
  • Complains about feeling bloated or nauseated even when she eats normally
  • Loses hair or hair begins to thin
  • Always cold, even when temperature is normal
  • Stops menstruating

Warning Signs of Bulimia:

The person…

  • Engages in binge eating
  • Uses the bathroom frequently after meals
  • Reacts to stress by overeating
  • Has menstrual irregularities
  • Has swollen glands
  • Strict dieting following binge eating
  • Experiences frequent fluctuations in weight

  • Frequently overeats, especially when distressed
  • Buys large amounts of food that disappear quickly
  • Is obsessively concerned about weight
  • Attempts to diet, but generally fails
  • Feels guilty, ashamed, and out of control about eating
  • Social isolation/depressive moods
  • Is distressed about binge eating
